What is a Needs Assessment?

Using guidelines developed by the California Department of Social Services, a social worker completes a face-to-face appointment with you in your home to gather information and makes an assessment of your need for in-home care based on all information provided including your medical condition, your living arrangement, and what assistance you may be getting from your family, friends, or available community services. The needs assessment will determine which services are authorized. Your doctor and other sources may be consulted about your medical condition and need for services.

What services are available?

The following are some of the services that may be available to you through the In-Home Supportive Services Program:

  • Household and heavy cleaning, meal preparation, laundry, reasonable shopping and errands.
  • Personal care services, such as feeding, bathing, bowel and bladder care, dressing, and other services.
  • Assistance with transportation for medical appointments and health related services.
  • Paramedical Care Services

Who provides the services?

In Orange County you will hire, terminate, and supervise your own provider. Your social worker will authorize the types of services to be provided and the amount of time to be paid based on the needs assessment. The actual provider payments are issued by the State of California directly to the provider.
