Teen Volunteer Work Experience Program

Social Services Agency Office Support Volunteer

The County of Orange Social Services Agency (SSA) operates under the policy direction of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and the California Departments of Social Services and Health Services. SSA is responsible for planning, implementing and operating many of the social services programs provided by the County of Orange.

Minimum Age to Volunteer
Teens and young adults between 16 and 19 years of age may apply.
Please note there are no exceptions to the age requirements listed.

Locations to Schedule Volunteer Shifts 
Several office locations are available. Please see the application form referenced below for specific addresses.

Volunteer Duties/Responsibilities
Under close supervision, volunteers will assist SSA staff with tasks such as opening, sorting and processing mail; filing; basic data entry/word processing; photocopying; reception backup; lobby assistance; packet stuffing; faxing; preparing training packages; training room preparation and clean-up; escorting trainees to classroom; boxing up legal folders for closed files; setting appointments; answering phones; working in the store room and forms room; and various other clerical duties.

Volunteers will work in a safe, well-supervised, primarily office environment with a couple of warehouse opportunities at the Warner facility.  Teens will be assigned and trained on age-appropriate duties. Since volunteers may have some contact with clients and/or confidential information, they will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement. A parent/guardian will also be required to sign the agreement if the volunteer is under the age of 18.

Skills or Qualifications Needed
Volunteers must demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to process information and learn new procedures to provide support to SSA customers. Basic computer and customer service skills are helpful in this position. Additional qualifications include: data entry skills; ability to lift up to 20 pounds; good communication skills; ability to follow directions; and good interpersonal skills. Appropriate casual attire is required for a business setting.

Time Commitment
The Teen Volunteer Work Experience Program operates for six weeks from June 26 to August 4, 2023.  If a volunteer wishes to schedule hours beyond August 4, special arrangements may be made at the discretion of the work site. There is no minimum time commitment; however, volunteer hours must not exceed 20 hours per week. Volunteer schedules must be coordinated with the work site supervisor.
